a possible interpretation for this piece,

"...Dougie had been staring into the darkness for what seemed like hours... ...Jorge was watching the road... ...depending on what they saw coming down that road, they could both be back in jail in Key West, or worse, before the night was done... ...Dougie thought he saw a light flicker on the horizon... ...it was no choice - danger by land or danger by sea..."
